Historia obiektu

Garbarnia przy ul. Stare Miasto 4/5 uruchomiona została w 1868 r. przez Teodora Karscha syna Ludwika Karsza, w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie istniejącej już garbarni należącej do tej rodziny. Początkowo specjalizowała się w produkcji skór juchtowych i podeszwowych. Dzięki wyposażeniu garbarni w maszynę parową do mielenia kory dębowej, w drugiej połowie XIX w. stała się największym zakładem garbarskim w mieście. Zatrudniała ponad 70 pracowników. Właściciel garbarni w jej pobliżu wybudował mieszkania dla najbardziej wykwalifikowanych robotników. W 1884 r. w wyniku podziałów rodzinnych, garbarnia przeszła w ręce Franciszka Wickenhagena – szwagra Teodora Karsha. Zmieniając nazwę na Zakłady Garbarskie i Fabryka Pasów Franciszka Wickenhagena. Zakłady oprócz skóry podeszwowej wyrabiały również pasy transmisyjne. W 1912 r. zatrudniały blisko 100 pracowników i były nastawione na produkcję do Rosji. W skutek utraty po I wojnie światowej wschodnich rynków zbytu oraz z powodu importu do Polski tanich skór z Czech i Austrii firma zaczęła przeżywać kryzys finansowy w wyniku czego przekształcono ją w spółkę akcyjną. Ponieważ nadal przynosiła straty w 1930 r. została zlikwidowana. Nieruchomość zlicytowano a budynki adaptowano na składy handlowe, małe warsztaty i mieszkania.

Opis

Kompleks po garbarni choć zapomniany, zachował się w nie zmienionej formie do dnia dzisiejszego. Od ulicy Floriana zlokalizowany jest budynek mieszkalny właściciela, zbudowany w stylu eklektycznym z bardzo skromnym detalem, o jego dawnej świetności świadczyć może jedynie klatka schodowa z marmurowymi schodami i żeliwną zdobioną motywami roślinnymi balustradą. Od zakładu garbarskiego, część mieszkalną oddziela ogród. Kolejnym budynkiem przy ulicy Floriana jest budynek mieszkalny z mieszkaniami dla robotników otynkowany, z dwuspadowym dachem pokrytym papą, sąsiaduje on z budynkami po garbarskimi. Od strony placu Stare Miasto zlokalizowany jest jeden z budynków garbarni dawniej nieotynkowany, licowany cegłą, z charakterystycznym, typowym dla architektury przemysłowej ceglanym detalem. Obecnie częściowo otynkowany, z zatartymi elementami detalu i zmienioną stolarką okienną, w części został przekształcony na budynek mieszkalny. W głębi posesji znajduje się szereg budynków po garbarskich murowanych z cegły przekrytych dachami dwu spadowymi, pokrytymi papą.

Uwagi

Zwiedzając to miejsce można odnieść wrażenie jakby czas zatrzymał się w miejscu.

Lokalizacja nieruchomości w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie najstarszej części Radomia – wzgórza „Piotrówka” oraz dobra na nie ekspozycja predysponują to miejsce do przekształceń na cele związane z turystyką i obsługą parku kulturowego „Stary Radom”. Przekształcenia takie będą tym cenniejsze im więcej starej substancji zostanie wykorzystane do nowych inwestycji. Niepowtarzalny charakter miejsca w zestawieniu z nową funkcją, może okazać się kołem napędowym dla usług i rzemiosła dzielnicy oraz podniesienia estetyki Starego Miasta.
